Meet the Fashion Bloggers India Rose

22 January 2014

In this series, we’ve been interviewing some of our favorite fashion bloggers around the world, today our featured blogger is India Rose.

Tell us a little bit about yourself (who you are/what you do/where you’re from, etc.).
My name’s India Rose and I was born in the Ribble Valley, Lancashire. I moved to South London when I was little and now I live in Chester, although I spend most of my time in Nottingham while studying Fashion Communication and Promotion at Nottingham Trent University. I work part time at American Apparel and I blog on the side.

How would you define your style?
My style changes frequently but I’m slowly finding myself as I get older. My style is currently quite laid back with strong sportswear and menswear influences. I don’t wear a lot of colour or print and I’m a huge fan of sneakers.

What inspired you to start a style blog? What motivates you to keep blogging?
I actually started blogging when I didn’t know much about the world of blogging, or fashion for that matter. I was studying photography at college and my tutor advised me to start one for a better chance at gaining a place on a fashion-based course at university. Once I’d gained a place at Nottingham Trent I stopped blogging, then fell back in love with it a year or so later.

How did you choose the name of your blog?
I’ve been told my name is quite memorable, and as I couldn’t think of a name, I just kept it as my own.

What was the best comment you ever received from a reader?
I have received quite a few via my Formspring, so I couldn’t really pick one. In fact, one girl once sent me a long email explaining how she was bullied in school and never knew what she wanted to be or how she wanted to dress due to peer pressure. She told me I helped her find her own style and now she is more confident than ever. Knowing I helped her in such a personal way was such a nice feeling. It’s nice because it motivates me to carry on and gives me comfort in knowing people appreciate what I do.

Who/what inspires you?
Anything and everything. Magazines, blogs, lookbooks, I see on the street, art… Oh and music plays a massive part in my style. My male friends inspire me a considerable amount too, as I like taking what they wear and making it my own.

What are your favourite pieces in your wardrobe?
That changes all the time but right now my creepers, my metallic cropped knit from H&M, American Apparel riding pants, all of my Levi’s denim shorts, a khaki jacket I can throw on with everything, Alexander Wang joggers, my Vans and my silk basics. Oh and my skinny black jeans get worn to death.

What is your top fashion tip?
Be true to yourself and don’t follow trends. Just buy something because you like it.
What advice do you have for new bloggers or people considering starting a blog?
Again, be true to yourself and try to have a vision of what you want from your blog. Don’t create a blog with the intention to gain loads of followers straight away, as it’s a natural progression. And enjoy it while you do it!

What importance do social networks have for you?
Although sometimes I hate that it is social networking is very important for what I want to do. It helps gain exposure and it’s a good way to give a personal take on everything.

Your first thought in the morning?
How I’d kill to stay in bed forever.

What is your favourite thing to do when not blogging?
Anything music related. Spending time with friends, and spending stupid amounts of money on clothes and stuff that I really don’t need.

For you, what is the world’s most fashionable city?
Well on paper it would have to be Milan. But for me, at the moment, it would have to be London. New York is up there but there is something about a Londoner’s ability to make an outfit that is quite considered to look less done, which I love.

How would you describe fashion in the city where you live?
I currently live in Nottingham and to be honest there isn’t much going on here. A lot of the people dress the same and people don’t push the boundaries as much as they do in London, although there are quite a few people I see about that dress well. It’s just a little behind is all.

What message do you hope to send to your readers?
That you can look a certain way without spending thousands on clothes, and that you don’t have to follow trends or dress a certain way. You will always look the best when you dress for you.
