Meet the Fashion Bloggers The Odd Girl

22 January 2014

To celebrate the many fabulous fashion bloggers, in this series, we will be interviewing some of our favorites and finding inspiration in their styles, today we are meeting Marijn of The Odd Girl.

Marijn, tell us a little bit about yourself (who you are/what you do/where you’re from, etc.).
Born and raised in the Netherlands. Regular girl from top to toe. Like to think about my future, hate to think about my past. My mom and dad once surprised me with life. Since that day, I act like I’m actually living. No, I’m not living yet. I only exist. Photography, fashion and music make me feel alive. I think I’ve done this 14 years on earth pretty well so far.

How would you define your style?
Ordinary. I’m such a regular girl, who likes fashion and loves matching total different clothes. My wardrobe is full of shit I don’t even wear, but mostly I wear something very, very basic with an item the most people around me rarely wear. I love wearing clothes that are NOT worn by the other 1000 girls at my school.

How did you find your sense of style?
It’s a silly story. Years ago I found a webpage on the internet called: “Create Your Own Style”. It taught me how to distinguish my clothes. From that day, I actually started mixing and combining all the items of my wardrobe. And here I am, with a growing style/photography blog with ‘fashion’ as main subject. I´m not the girl who says: ‘I was a fashionista from the very first moment I could talk’. It’s just some evolution in my life.

What inspired you to start a style blog? What motivates you to keep blogging?
When I read my favorite magazines, I usually get totally excited. At that moment I immediately want to get started with being creative: taking pictures, making collages, go shopping, you name it.. One day I noticed this special feature about blogging girls. And of course I started checking it out, but first I wanted to wait to see which way the cat jumps. It ended up as my very own blog, but it was a great beginning for me. It still is.
What keeps me motivated? The lovely comments and critics of my dear followers. I really care about them. They check out my blog almost every day, and that’s the one thing I’m doing it for. The happiness of my followers, and in the end it makes me happy.

How did you choose the name of your blog?

Honestly, I used to be bullied for the way I look. It broke me inside, I felt like nobody cared about me. Until that day I started doing my thing. It felt like I just got myself a pencil and started drawing my own path to my future, and to my core. I was part of a life-changing conspiracy about who I really am. I started dressing the way I like it, not how the rest of the world likes it. At my school, you’re called “odd” the moment when you start acting or dressing different than anyone else. It don’t give a sh*t anymore, haha. Everybody should be happy in their own way. Everybody should draw their own path.

What was the best comment you ever received from a reader?
My mom suddenly told me that she was proud of me. She said she liked my photography. I wasn’t expecting anything from her. She’s an amazing woman, and honestly I can be a real bitch to her. The moment she said that, I was actually melting. It was so sweet and unexpected! It made me feel really happy. Thanks, mom. :-)

Who/what inspires you?
The randomness of life, and also fashion bloggers like Tavi Gevinson and the Rock N Rollerr.

What are your favourite pieces in your wardrobe?
I adore my leather pants and my galaxy dress.

What is your top fashion tip?
Don’t follow trends, like Olivia Palermo once said. Of course you naturally buy some items that apparently are “trendy”. But make sure you always follow your own style; the way you like it and nothing else. There are plenty of copycats on earth already.

What advice do you have for new bloggers or people considering starting a blog?
Just do it! You may be successful, and if not: you enjoy blogging, don’t you? Remember that you start a blog because of the joy and the passion, not because of the fame or the free clothes. Of course that’s very nice, but it’s not what blogging is about.

Your first thought in the morning?
‘Yeah baby, I’m gonna kick your ass today!’, until I collapse. LOL ;-)

What is your favourite thing to do when not blogging?
I love to spend time reading (fashion) magazines. Also, I like to sing and accompany myself on my piano. Music feels good.

How would you describe fashion in the city where you live?
Boring. Almost everybody is dressed the same way, I don’t like that. Maybe it should be this way, that non-creative way because I’m in secondary school. It must be great to be that “grown-up” and be independent.

What message do you hope to send to your readers?
That when you have that tickling, warm feeling in your belly.. That feeling that says: ‘you MUST do this right now!’.. You always have to do that thing you have that feeling about. When you’re in that mood, you should stay like that for a while. You can accomplish a lot when you’re entirely going for it.
