The made in Sicily art and craftmanship: the coffa by Sikuly

Sicily, between fashion, art and tradition.24 August 2015

Sicily, the land of the old and fascinating artistic and cultural heritage, is the muse of many international designers just as Dolce&Gabbana: it is famous all over the world not only for its natural beauties and gastronomic delicacies, but also for its typical refined craftmanship that it is still a true tesimony of the Arab, Norman and Byzantine influences of the island.

Along side the manifacture of ceramics, of which Caltagirone is the main producer city, as typical Sicilian product and productions we also found the manufacturing of volcanic stones and corals, the Sicilian "pupi" and "carretto" (in sicilian means little cart), and obviously the typical bag: the "coffa".
It is an handmade nest realized by plating the "curina", a part of the leaves of the mediterranean dwarf palm, that is particularly resistant: it was initially used to carry goods and materials on mules.

The "coffa" - designed by Sikuly, the newborn brand created by a group of young Sicilian entrepreneurs from Catania- is entirely hand-decorated, using raw materials of high quality, carefully selcted.

They are finished with fabrics in pendant and passementerie, and include a internal pochette for accessories, whereas the frontal metal plate is hand-painted by the masters of the decorative Sicilian art, wich subjects represent the Sicilian tradition.
The mission of the young team is to promote all over the world the values and beauties of their land through an artifact, wisely revisited, symbol of Sicily that becomes in this way an exclusice accessory with brilliant colours and an old-fashonated design.
