Meet the Fashion Bloggers Grit and Glamour

21 January 2014

We are inspired by real girls, who look like us, and who create looks we can all emulate, today our featured blogger is Vahni of Grit and Glamour.

Vahni, tell us a little bit about yourself (who you are/what you do/where you’re from, etc.).
I’m a first-generation Greek American who was raised in the south eastern U.S. I’m a professional Web content developer and hobby blogger. I’m married with no children, and aside from fashion, I love dogs.

How would you define your style?
Edgy, sophisticated, unexpected.

What inspired you to start a style blog? What motivates you to keep blogging?
Until very recently, I worked as a Web writer and content developer in the financial services industry (I’m elated to be transitioning to a more creative industry in the next month—I am so not a banker!). I needed somewhere to channel my creativity, so I started a blog in 2006. I think I’m motivated to keep blogging now because of the connections I’ve made and amazing opportunities I’ve had because of blogging.

How did you choose the name of your blog?
At the time, I was contemplating it and I happened to read an article that described the “grit and glamour” of a place, I think in New York. I read those words and thought nothing could better describe me, my life. I am both things. Strong, willing to get my hands dirty on occasion—but also very feminine, with a propensity for over-the-topness.

Who/what inspires you?
As far as fashion goes, I’m very inspired by pop culture, fashion magazines, bloggers, and celebrities. I love seeing how other people mix things up. Generally speaking, I’m very inspired by people who dedicate their lives to helping animals and those with disabilities or disadvantages.

What are your favourite pieces in your wardrobe?
My black Mongolian lamb vest from Witchery in Australia. I live in it through fall and winter. It makes any outfit look more interesting, and it seriously goes with everything. I also have a black side-slit pencil skirt from BCBG that’s 14 years old that I’d be totally lost without. I wear it like every other week and it still looks amazing!

What advice do you have for new bloggers or people considering starting a blog?
Consider your objective first. Do you just need an outlet for your creativity? Are you looking for an online community or friendship? Are you hoping to make money? Knowing what your intent is will save you a lot of time and effort. I just had a conversation about this with someone the other day. She wants to start a new fashion-oriented blog and monetize it, but she had never heard of many of the top fashion blogs, communities, or technology. I told her to start by doing a LOT of research and reading. It’s a very competitive world, fashion blogging. If you want to make money at it, you need to study, invest time and money, and understand what brands and advertisers are looking for.
